We all know that after getting pets are carpets aren't going to be what they were. We're much less likely to have clean carpets, we're much less likely to have the carpets for as long without them becoming damaged, and there will be dog chews, hairs and rugs on the floor making things look cluttered.

More than this though the carpet will get damaged in other ways and will lose colour and start to smell. This is why carpet cleaners are so important if you have pets – carpet cleaners are always a good idea to maintain a clean, attractive and healthy area, but if you have pets they become frankly paramount.

So there's no question that dogs or cats damage our carpets (dogs arguably being the worse culprits) – the question is how they manage to be so destructive and what it is about pets precisely that leave our carpets a shadow of their former selves. Here we will list just a few of the things that can happen to your carpet as a result of having dogs or cats.

First of all, even the best house-trained pets sometimes have 'accidents' (or more like purposeful acts of defiance), and this then means that you will have excrement to clear up. This of course leaves stains and means you need pet stain removal, but it also means you have some not-so-healthy bacteria in your carpet fibres and means that it will smell. Brilliant.

Fortunately this is only a relatively rare occurrence however, and if you train your animals well it should still be the exception to the rule – not the rule. However pets do do other things to your carpet – for instance they malt and leave hairs and this makes the carpet look a lot worse as a result. If your dog or cat malt (poodles and short haired dogs and cats do not) then you should try to avoid letting them on the carpet by giving them a designated rug or bed that's comfier than the floor so that they opt more often to sit on that than your floor and the hairs stay on their too as a result leaving you with a clean carpet. It's also a good idea to brush them regularly.

On top of this though pets also have a habit to tear and scratch at carpet and this can leave holes and areas where you can see the ground. This is a more serious form of deterioration and needs to be discouraged by telling your pet off when they start digging or 'needling'.

Lastly pets are dirty – they tend to be covered in dirt and fleas – so when they roll on the carpet your once clean carpet comes off worse. To avoid this keep your animals as clean as possible by bathing them regularly and using a good shampoo. Use lots of scented sprays to meanwhile keep things smelling nicer. On top of this make sure you get regularly carpet cleaning to ensure that you clean the carpets thoroughly at least every so often.
